Post-NYE Sparkle

When it comes to New Year’s Eve, one thing that me, you, and everyone else probably have in common is the pressing need to drop all everything and buy a plethora of sparkly, sequin-covered, and metallic garments. I’ve spent the countdown doing everything from watching the ball drop on T.V. with my mom while eating leftover Christmas baking, to attending a party that was so crowded no one realized it was midnight until after it came and went. Regardless of my plans, I’m always wearing some sort of outfit that somewhat resembles my early childhood gymnastics costumes or a disco ball. Unfortunately, this means that each year in the month of January I’m left with some sort of reflective piece of clothing bought for NYE that I’ll never wear again. So, in an effort to repurpose some of my past New Year’s looks, I’m collecting inspiration for making sparkly clothing casual.

Sequin Pants + A Blazer

Life lesson: when in doubt, a blazer can make just about any questionably appropriate outfit look perfectly curated. For proof of this, try pairing a blazer with sequin pants and they’re guaranteed to immediately go from NYE getup to polished and put together.

Holographic Crop Top + Boyfriend Jeans

This outfit is, in my opinion, one of the greatest marriages of 2013 & 2014 so far. Take your sparkly/metallic/hologram New Year’s crop top and pair it with a pair of boyfriend jeans (the very article of denim which I fully expect to dominate this year). You already know it’s going to be a winning combination due to the fact that Rihanna has done it.

Sequin Mini + A T-Shirt

A sequin mini skirt is one of those things that seems impossible to style for anything other than drinking champagne and dancing on tables. That said, a t-shirt and sneakers can dress down anything, and they make a skirt, even as sparkly as this one, look totally casual.

Metallic Shirt Dress + Fur Vest

Okay, so metallic is probably the least New Year’s-ey New Year’s material because it’s easy to wear again, but this look had to be included because, well…it’s great.

Sequin Dress + Crew Neck Sweatshirt

Maybe this one isn’t so much an outfit idea as it is a clever trick, but it’s still useful. Since most occasions (those that aren’t NYE) don’t call for a sequin-covered mini dress, the best way to repurpose this article of clothing is by disguising it as a skirt. Throwing a crew neck sweatshirt over the dress in a similar shade not only does this, it also dresses down the outfit down.
